What do people think of when thinking of Mexican food? Many Californians would automatically think, big burritos – California burritos, chips and salsa, margaritas, shots of Tequila, beans, wet burritos, etc., etc. But, is this authentic Mexican cuisine?
At Tequila 100, a small restaurant in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter, is often overlooked by many pasersby. But, what these people are missing, it the true authenticity of real Mexican flavor. Nestled on 5th Ave. between F and G streets, Tequila 100′s decor includes hand-carved wooden furniture, vibrantly hand-painted walls, planters hanging from the ceiling, and a bar stocked with an array of tequila bottles from various parts of Mexico. They friendly staff is eager to serve you as they explain the traditions of Mexican cuisine and flavor.
Among some of their best dishes are the Pastor tacos: sweet and spicy marinated pork pieced into a small corn tortilla and accompanied by bits of pineapple, cilantro, and onion; Sope: a small, maize cake topped with black bean paste, chicken, lettuce, tomato, crema, and Cotija cheese; and the Enfrijolada: scrambled eggs wrapped in a tortilla drenched in black bean sauce and drizzled with crema and chorizo. Now this is Mexico!
If you’re looking for a real margarita, steer clear from the green stuff in the bottle. They make their own margarita mix here! A salted rimmed glass with the light flavor of a good Tequila, pure agave juice, real lime and orange juices, and ice are the perfect ingredients for the tangy/sweet cocktail. Yum!
To make this place even better…Mexican know how to have FUN! They offer karaoke Thursday-Saturday nights, stay open until 3am of Friday and Saturday, and they offer Mexican breakfast every morning! Now that’s what I’m talking about!
If you haven’t been here, and you frequent the Gaslamp Quarter, SHAME ON YOU! Try it out, and see for yourself what you’ve been missing out on! And for those of you who are in from out of town…if you’re looking to taste the real flavors of Mexican food, a taco shop won’t do…hit up Tequla 100 and get at least the Pastor Taco when you’re in the Gaslamp Quarter. It’s the perfect snack!
