Every month you have the perfect opportunity to stray from the herd. While they plod (or stampede) along the well worn path toward Target or Walmart, you can blaze your own trail (at your own pace) into San Diego’s Historical Gaslamp Quarter for some fresh non-conformist fashions.
There’s a hidden treasure on 6th Avenue. It’s called Industry Showroom and I was fascinated during my interview of co-owner, Rex Edhlund…
“Industry Showroom is a unique small business incubator space with a common area retail floor, art gallery, yoga studio, event facility, a photo studio and private offices. It’s a new paradigm in collaborative spaces, a capitalist commune that allows small businesses to launch, grow, and flourish in a vibrant community environment for a fraction of the normal start-up costs.”
After being trashed by a previous tenant, the building housing Industry Showroom had been vacant for more than a year. Rex worked with the building owner to “breathe life into an otherwise dead building” and “provide an inexpensive creative environment for small businesses”. He did it…and, it’s hip. In fact, it’s the only shared space in downtown San Diego that includes a combination of retail and office…
Current retail and office tenants include Atomic Laser Lab, Consuul Clothing, BritBoy Fashions, Popular Naughty, Area 6, Melt Boutique, Nail Bar & Lash Studio, DCompress Downtown, Urban Yogi, and our very own So Diego Tours (yes…I’m lucky enough to work here!). The icing on the cake is the Sudden Art Gallery, currently featuring inspired original works by Koi, Delisa Lopez, Spic, N.O.M.A.D., Mofo, Franky Agostino, Monique Jenkins, Gumaro, E. Manansala, and Monk. (Exhibits are refreshed monthly.)
In addition to the regular inhabitants, it’s not out of the ordinary for a nomad (or two or twenty) to wander through here. Recently, an up and coming hip hop artist shot his video here…and, I’m excited to announce that the Bohemians are coming!
On the third Saturday of each month (spring dates are March 26, April 23, and May 28), floor space is cleared to make way for the “BOHEMIAN MARKET”.
